Tape suggests PKR wanted Aminah back

By Lee Wei Lian~ malaysian insider

PENANTI, May 26 – The audio recording provided by independent candidate Aminah Abdullah appears to suggest that two PKR men were in discussions with Aminah over her possible return to the party as well as a possible withdrawal from the Penanti by-election.

The former PKR Penang Wanita chief had claimed that her former party had tried to bribe her by offering the Penang deputy chief minister (DCM) post and made available a hefty three-and-a half-hour audio recording containing rambling conversation about PKR-related matters, to back her allegations.

PKR supreme council member Cheah Kah Peng admitted today that it was he and Penang state exco Law Choo Kiang’s aide Peter Lim, in the recording which was made when they had lunch with Aminah to discuss her possible return to the party.

Aminah Abdullah has handed over a hefty three-and-a half-hour audio recording to the MACC. - Picture by Choo Choy MayAminah said the duo also offered her RM80,000 worth of compensation to withdraw from the contest.

The audio recording does not seem to indicate a firm offer but that of an exploratory discussion.

At two hours 21 minutes of the recording, a PKR man, likely to be Lim who is reported to have done most of the talking, says: “Agak berapa budget Aminah tanding kali ini?”

Aminah’s husband then replies: “80(,000). Itu pun cukup cukup.”

The PKR man then says: “Kalau boleh tarik diri (inaudible) boleh panggil parti bayar u balik lah.”

At 2:25 The PKR man says: “Minggu ini kita bincang dengan Dr Mansor, tengok apa balasan (inaudible).”

At 2:35 Aminah appears to be talking about her unhappiness with Penang chief Datuk Zahrain Mohamed Hashim.

At 2:36 the PKR man then says: “You jadi DCM, you atas daripada dia. I bagi tau betui, kalau dengan tidak sengaja, dan tidak dirancang, kemungkinan you terpilih atau menang dalam pertandingan tu, besar jugak...(inaudible).”

Aminah’s husband then says: “Ini politik”.

Aminah then says: “Kena bagi idea.”

The PKR man then continues: “Sekarang kerajaan Pulau Pinang ia kekurangan wakil Melayu tau. Jadi kalau kita tak ambil hati Melayu, nanti semua Melayu tak sokong. So kalau wanita Melayu, dia pertama pegang jawatan itu, Melayu rasa Oh you memang hargai dihargai wanita Melayu. Wanita you pun sokong. Kemungkinan jugak, tapi jangan harapkan. Kita kena ambil kira semua kemungkinan walaupun kemungkinan percentage yang kurang. At least kita sudah bersedia.”

Aminah then says: “Walau apa pun, you cakap dengan Datuk Seri (Anwar Ibrahim), you cakap dengan Dr Mansor (inaudible) kita ada lawyer kan.”
One of the two PKR men also seemed to agree with Aminah’s husband when he called Mansor a “slow” leader.

At about the 56th minute mark, Aminah’s husband says: “Dr Mansor... dia slow.”
A PKR man is then heard agreeing: “Dia lemah lah, dia lemah.”

When asked for his comments, PKR election director, Saifuddin Nasution said the two had to talk like that in order to keep the conversation with Aminah going and they may not have meant it.

The duo also rubbished Aminah’s claims.

“It was just a meeting of a jovial nature. We categorically deny the allegations made by her. The recording is misleading. The meeting was done in our own personal capacity and not endorsed by any organisation,” Cheah told reporters during a press conference this afternoon.

that certain quarters have tended to ridicule judgments of the courts solely for these judgments having ruled one way rather than the other. For them, the expected outcome defines everything.

If it is not disappointing then it is presumed that the process of the law was not compromised. However, if the outcome is disappointing then it is a given that the process was subverted. This cannot be the right way to look at things as, whatever the case, the process of the law is crucial.-Malik Imtiaz Sarwar
